Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a private hip surgeon in London?
No, a formal GP referral is not mandatory to book an initial private consultation with us. However, if you intend to claim the cost of your consultation and subsequent treatment through private medical insurance (such as Bupa or AXA), your insurer will usually require a GP referral letter to authorize coverage.
What is the benefit of the Direct Anterior Approach for hip replacement?
Unlike traditional surgery that requires cutting through the gluteal muscles or posterior tendons, the Direct Anterior Approach works through a natural gap between the muscles. By leaving the soft tissues intact, patients typically experience less pain, a shorter hospital stay, a quicker transition away from crutches, and a vastly reduced risk of post-operative hip dislocation.
How long is the recovery period after a private hip replacement?
While recovery varies by individual, most anterior hip replacement patients are up and walking within hours of surgery. Most return home within 1 to 2 days. You can generally expect to return to light daily activities within 2 to 3 weeks, driving within 3 to 4 weeks, and low-impact sports or strenuous activity within 6 to 12 weeks.
What should I bring to my initial consultation?
Please bring any recent imaging reports (X-rays or MRI scans) on a disc or access link if they were performed outside our partner hospitals. It is also helpful to bring a complete list of your current medications, your insurance membership and pre-authorisation numbers (if applicable), and any notes on your clinical history.
