Surgeons

Professor John Hollingdale

Professor John Hollingdale completed his medical studies at the Westminster Medical School in 1975. He completed his orthopedic training on the Charing Cross and St Mary’s rotation. He was appointed a consultant in 1987. He worked at Central Middlesex and Northwick Park Hospital until he retired from the NHS in 2017. During his time at Central Middlesex, he developed an interest in lower limb arthroplasty. He sat on the council of the British Orthopaedic Association for three years.

He is a lifelong member of the International Society for technology in athroplasty and was president of the Society in 2010. Recently, he has become interested in robotically assisted hip replacement surgery. He also had a special interest in sports medicine and for a time was the orthopaedic surgeon to Arsenal football club and the London Irish rugby football club. He is married to Jane who he met at the Westminster medical school when he was a student. He was awarded a visiting professorship at the Annan Research and medical centre in Mauritius in 2015.

He is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College and continues to teach medical students and interview prospective medical students for Imperial College every year.

Professor Richard Field

Professor Richard Field is a specialist hip surgeon with practices in both the NHS and Private sectors.  He is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at St George’s University of London. His NHS Practice is based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) where he is the Director of Research and leads the academic surgical team.  His private practice is based at the Lister Hospital in Chelsea, the Chelsea Out-Patient Centre at 280 Kings Rd and St Anthony’s Hospital in Cheam.

Prof Field decided to pursue a career in Orthopaedic Surgery shortly after qualifying in 1980.  He stepped out of clinical medicine in the early 1980s to undertake a PhD at Cambridge University, on the design of a hip resurfacing implant. After completing his PhD he returned to clinical practice and has remained actively involved in the design and evaluation of new hip and knee designs throughout his career.

Prof Field is the UK’s most experienced surgeon in Anterior Hip Replacement.

Prof Field has undertaken many world-first operations.  His pioneering work in arthroscopic hip surgery was recognised by his Presidency of ISHA, the International Society for Hip Preservation Surgery, in 2016-7.

Mr Charles Gibbons

Mr Gibbons is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip arthroplasty (joint replacement). He was appointed at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2002. He qualified from The London Hospital in 1989 and completed basic surgical training in Bath, London and Chelmsford. He was a Registrar on The Chelsea and Westminster Rotation and completed a fellowship year in Australia in 2001 (Melbourne and Adelaide).

His private practice is at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea and The New Victoria Hospital in Kingston-upon-Thames. He has been Clinical Lead for the Orthopaedic Department the The Chelsea and Westminster where he continues to work and train Orthopaedic Specialist Registrars.

 

 

 

 

Anaesthetists

Dr Anwar Hussein

Dr Hussein graduated from Oxford University Medical School and trained both as an anaesthetist as well as an intensive care specialist at the North West London School of Anaesthesia. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCA) and has served as an RCA Clinical Tutor. He is registered with the GMC and is on the Specialist Register for anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. He has also undertaken research, gaining a PhD from Oxford University.

In his NHS Practice, Dr Hussein is the Clinical Director of peri-operative care, and administers anaesthesia for Prof Field’s patients, at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

In his Private Practice, Dr Hussein works with Prof Field and Prof Hollingdale to provide a comprehensive anaesthetic and peri-operative care service. He is also Director of a team of Consultant Intensivists that run the Intensive Care Service at St Anthony’s Hospital.

Zoe Beer

Zoe has been working with Prof Field since October 2008 when she joined the research department team at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre. After completing her medical secretarial training, Zoe worked as Prof Field’s NHS secretary and departmental administrator until the beginning of 2013. Following a maternity break, Zoe returned to the department, as a part-time member of the Outcomes team, in 2016. Towards the end of 2019, Zoe was able to resume full-time work and joined Prof Field’s private practice as his PA. Zoe now co-ordinates all aspects of the practice and should be your first point of contact to arrange appointments, schedule surgery and for day-to-day queries.

Alison Monkcom

Alison Monkcom is a senior Medical PA and has worked with Charles Gibbons since 2008. She qualified as a chartered physiotherapist from The Middlesex Hospital and then became a physiotherapy practice manager before her present management position.

Katie Christie

Katie Christie has worked with Mr Gikas since 2016. Katie has over a decade of experience as a medical secretary, mainly working with Orthopaedic surgeons.

Katie is available to answer queries and help you plan your treatment from Monday to Friday and should be your first port of call to arrange your appointments, surgery or just to answer general enquiries.
